Breckenridge Terrace: Just another housing unit… or something more?

When I first moved into Breckenridge Terrace in Colorado, I thought it was just a standard housing spot for seasonal workers — nothing more than a place to rest after long shifts. But over time, the place began to reveal a different energy, something unsettling that I couldn’t quite explain.

One of the strangest nights happened when I was coming back from a friend’s place next door. I went to open my own front door, but it felt like someone was pushing back from the inside, actively trying to keep me out. It wasn’t jammed — it felt intentional, almost human. My friend watched from her door as I struggled, and just as she opened hers wider to check on me, that force… vanished. Suddenly, my door opened with ease. I was shaken, and I didn’t sleep in my place that night. I couldn’t.
On a different day, during my time off, I was lying on the couch and remember lighting a cigarette before dozing off. What happened next felt like a dream — but also like something more. I “woke up” to find a man wearing a blue staff jacket standing at the entrance. I don’t remember his face clearly, but I know he smiled at me. We spoke briefly, casually, like old coworkers or neighbors. Then, he laid down calmly on the floor near the wall across from me. I blinked, and when I actually woke up, I was alone. My roommates were all out. No one came in.

When I mentioned this experience to some locals at my second job, they didn’t seem surprised. In fact, they said I wasn’t the only one. People had seen things, felt things — shadows passing through rooms, footsteps with no source. Some even gave the “presence” a nickname, almost as if trying to normalize it, live with it. I didn’t want to be part of that game, to believe it could be real. But then again, maybe it is.
Breckenridge Terrace sits just at the corner of the town’s cemetery. That detail never mattered to me — until these things started happening. Some of my roommates swore they saw figures walking near the house at night. I didn’t believe them at first. I laughed it off. But now, when I lie in bed and these memories resurface, I wonder… what if it wasn’t just a joke?

Some places hold memories. Others hold something else. And while we can’t prove anything, I know what I felt. Whether it was my mind playing tricks or something more real than we dare admit, one thing’s for sure: I’ll never forget it.
